Mine were fairly late being planted out, but started off early-ish (March). Everything is about a month behind normal this year. As for blackly.... squish 'em with your fingers. Don gloves if squeamish, and shut your eyes. I love the bright pink of the tiny 'Roxy' with its bright yellow stamens which gives a cheery poke of colour at the front of the border. The blushing pastel decorative dahlia at the top is 'Peaches'.
